• Announced in December 1997 in Prague that the final singles event of her career would be the 1998 Australian Open in January, but that she would continue to play doubles
• Came out of singles retirement to play at 1998 Wimbledon, where she lost to 13th seed Patty Schnyder in three sets in the first round
• Defeated 10th seed and former champion Conchita Martinez in the third round of 1997 Wimbledon; also defended mixed doubles title with brother, Cyril Suk
• In the 1997 season-ending Chase Championships with partner Larisa Neiland, upset top seeds Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva in the first round, ending Fernandez' career, before falling in the semifinals; qualified for the season-ending championships 11 times in singles as one of the best 16 players of the season and 13 times in doubles as part of the best eight teams
• Two-time champion at 1996 Wimbledon, winning doubles with Martina Hingis and mixed doubles with brother, Cyril Suk; second time to win both doubles and mixed doubles at a Grand Slam (1993 US Open); second Grand Slam title with brother (1991 Roland Garros)
• Won 600th career match by defeating fourth-ranked Iva Majoli in quarterfinals at 1996 Rosmalen, becoming the ninth woman in the Open Era (since 1968) to reach that milestone; seeded eighth, continued on to reach final of Rosmalen
• Upset world No. 2 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in quarterfinals at 1996 Leipzig
• At the 1996 Olympics with countrywoman Jana Novotna, recaptured the Olympic silver medal in doubles they first won at the 1988 Olympics
• Reached semifinals at 1995 Italian Open; upset fourth seed Gabriela Sabatini in third round 2-6, 7-6, 7-6; saved five match points in second set and came back after trailing 0-3 in the final set
• At 1993 US Open, became lowest seed (No. 12), since Pam Shriver in 1978 (16th seed), to reach singles final; won doubles and mixed doubles titles; became seventh woman in Open Era to reach all three finals at a Grand Slam event
• Handed Martina Navratilova her only indoor loss of 1988 (Virginia Slims Championships); stopped her grass win-streak of 69 matches at 1987 Eastbourne; at 1984 Australian Open, stopped her 74-match historic win streak
• At 1987 Eastbourne, became fourth player to defeat Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in same tournament

PERSONAL

From prominent Czech tennis family; mother Vera, who passed away in 1982, was a finalist at 1962 Wimbledon; father Cyril Suk, was President of the Czechoslovakian Tennis Federation; brother Cyril III., competed on the men's tour and is was a Captain of the Czech Davis Cup team....If she hadn't been a successful tennis player, wanted to be a soccer player or a doctor. Likes fast cars. Gained the title of Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Department of psychology at the Philosophical faculty at University Palacky.
